About JossUp
JossUp is a small, independent project that makes it easy for people in the same meeting, class, or friend group to play a quick game together — without downloading anything, without creating an account, and without hunting for the "right" app. One person opens the site, shares a six-letter code, and everyone else joins from whatever device is closest.
Why we built it
Most icebreaker tools are built for large corporate customers. They require a login, a subscription, and often a scheduled meeting. That is overkill for what most people actually want: a five-minute game at the top of a standup, a quick warm-up before a workshop, or something to do in a hangout call when the conversation stalls.
JossUp tries to remove every step between "we should play something" and actually playing it. That's the whole product goal.
What's here today
We currently host six games:
- Two Truths and a Lie — the classic icebreaker, playable online with 3 to 12 people.
- Name 3 Things — write three facts about a secretly-assigned teammate and see if they confirm each one.
- Story Builder — a collaborative story where each player adds one sentence on a timer.
- Boss Game — role-play a workplace boss archetype and let the room guess which one.
- Gungad — a solo mosquito-swatting game with a global high-score board.
- Air Hockey — local 2-player head-to-head on a single device. First to seven goals wins.
How it works technically
JossUp is a browser app built with React on the frontend and Firebase (Firestore + Anonymous Authentication) on the backend. Rooms exist only while people are actively playing; when everyone leaves, the room is cleared. We don't keep long-term profiles, and there is no email or password step.
How it's funded
The Service is free. It's supported by display ads on the home page and between games. If you'd rather not see personalized ads, our Privacy Policy explains how to opt out.
