Air Hockey
Local 2-player air hockey — one device, two paddles, first to seven.
Play Air Hockey →Air Hockey is the local-multiplayer game in the JossUp lineup. Two players share a single device — a phone flat on the table, a tablet between you, or a laptop with two people on the keyboard — and slap a puck back and forth until one side hits seven goals. It's the game to reach for when you want the room laughing in ninety seconds flat.
No rooms, no codes, no sign-ins. Open the page, plant a finger on each half, and go.
How to play
The playfield is oriented vertically so two people can face each other over a horizontal phone or tablet. The pink paddle defends the top goal, the cyan paddle defends the bottom. First player to seven goals wins.
On touch: each player drags a finger on their own half of the table to move their paddle. The game tracks multi-touch, so both players can move at the same time without stepping on each other.
On desktop: top player uses WASD, bottom player uses the arrow keys. Keyboard controls are handy when you're playing on a laptop and don't have a good touchscreen angle.
The puck accelerates when you hit it — the faster you swing, the faster it launches. Angled hits along the paddle edge produce the sharpest cuts. There's no friction on the wall bounces, so long-range banks off the side wall are a legitimate strategy.
Why local multiplayer
Most JossUp games are built for people in different places with a video call between them. Air Hockey is the opposite — it's designed for two humans who are physically next to each other and want zero setup friction.
It's the game to pull up at a bar table, on a train seat, or at the end of a coffee catch-up. Nobody has to install anything or type a code; you just hand the phone across the table.
Tips
- Defend first, attack second. Keep your paddle close to your goal line and only lunge forward when the puck is clearly heading toward the opponent's side.
- Aim for the corners of the enemy goal, not the middle. The goalie can't cover both posts.
- A gentle deflection is often more useful than a full-swing hit — you keep control of the puck's direction instead of firing it randomly.
- On phones, prop the device flat and use your thumbs from opposite sides. Face-to-face is more fun than side-by-side.
Where it fits
Two friends killing time. Kids in the back seat of a car. A tiebreaker at the end of a board-game night. Anywhere you have one device and two willing hands, Air Hockey works.
